"Thank You, America"

Description

Jewish couple Hedi and Ernest Schott, with daughter Eva in tow, fled Nazi Germany in 1940. They went sought sanctuary throughout the Soviet Union and China, before finally making it to Yokohama, Japan in order to sail to Angel Island, California. After a detainment period, the Schott family was finally released to relatives who vouched for them, finally settling in San Fransisco. The memorial bench reads, "In memory of Hedi and Ernest Schott who escaped from Germany to freedom in 1940."
