Duke K. Bettis states that he will send his family paper, stamps, and envelopes to write once a week. He also explains that he is sending money and tells his wife who they need to pay some debts to. Transcription of the letter reads:
"Sargent and ? second you wanted to know how I was satisfied. I am as well satisfied as could be expected under the circumstances ? I am ?in though. There is not a spot on this green earth away from home that would be home to me. ? like is coming up today ? if ? comes I will send my letter and other things. He is coming and will coming back on the nine oclock train tomorrow night. I will send you ? dollars worth of stamps and some paper and envelopes and I want you to use them every week unless you have the chance to send them by hand if you have made that shirt send t to me by ? If you have that piece of mixed ? if you have the chance I want you to make me a pair of pants out of it and send them and some letters too if this can be done without two[sic] much trouble. I commenced my letter yesterday to day is father(?) day he will come down on the nine oclock train sunday night. He says I sent fifty dollars up by home to you. I want you to pay that debt(?) that is going to ? Hamilton as soon as possible and get a receipt in full. I had paid several dollars on it the ? is at ? that seven dollars I dont suppose is credited on the ? get writing to straiten it out it is in his ? for collection pay father and mother four dollars and a half that is going to them I paid ?. I was owing him you get the note I am off so sending twenty five dollars by ? to henry(?) Elmore for L D Milligan the left ? with me to sell for him I have said it that seven dollars I shake on was the credit was given ? hamiltons the allowance of the money you had letter keep what you need for the present and let some person have the balance that will ? it to you when ? It is particularly needed ? right to me immediately and let me know how you are all getting along also let me know how the stock is doing and how you are getting a long ? let me know how ? opportunity how the wheat is doing and ? you want wright[sic] to me and I will try to get them, We sent them to."
