Select a high-quality espresso bean.
Grind 1 ½ Tbsp. espresso beans finer than you would for an espresso. If unable to grind the coffee beans fine enough, use a regular grind but tamp the coffee down harder than normal. The added pressure will slow the amount of water that can filter through.
Pull (about ½ ounce in 25 seconds) the coffee from the espresso machine. If too much liquid comes out, tamp harder the next time. If too little comes out, tamp down a little less next time.
