The Osceolas discuss basket making - - including when and how they learned the craft; patterns and designs; the choice of colors and materials (usually pine needles and/or palmetto fronds); teaching the young; selling baskets; and the basketry process. The recordings were created for the Florida Folklife Program's Seminole Slide and Tape Project, a program sponsored by the American Express Company in 1982-1983 to create two educational slide/tape programs for use by schools, community groups, and other educational outlets. Silver Springs is located in Ocala, FL. This location has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native people, including the Seminole Indians, and later by white settlers. In the 1930s, Ross Allen opened a reptile institute at the Silver Springs tourist attraction. Pedro Zepeda, Seminole Tribal member and Naples resident, reads Ross Allen's account of opening the Seminole Village at Silver Springs. Ross Allen's interview was conducted on November 11, 1970 by the University of Florida's Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. The second description comes from a former Ross Allen employee, Earl Debary. Earl describes the skills and knowledge of canoe builder Charlie Cypress. The last oral history comes from George Billie, Big Cypress Reservation resident and grandson of Charlie Cypress. In George's account, he shares the legend of Silver Springs as it was told to him by his grandmother. Title A name given to the resource John Horse, interpreter and war leader (1842) Subject The topic of the resource John Horse Description An account of the resource John Horse, also known as Gopher John (Juan Cavallo/Caballo), was an interpreter and war leader during the Second Seminole War. There is an interesting legend as to how John Horse acquired the nickname, "Gopher John." He had owned a few turtles and was asked to sell them to a U.S. Army Commander. The commander kept asking John to supply him with more turtles and paid John for them. When it was time for a big turtle meat banquet at the Army camp, the commander noticed only a few turtles in the pen. John had re-sold the officer his own turtles over and over again. At first angry, then mollified by John's ingeniousness, he made the youth supply the turtles paid for and nicknamed him Gopher John to serve as a constant reminder of his prank.
