Izzy initially debuted at the end of the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics and was met with reproach from the audience due to the character design. Criticism of Izzy from the 1992 Olympics led to the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games approaching producing company Film Roman to edit the character design and create the special to garner more likability for Izzy. After its initial airing on TNT in 1995, the special was aired in the Summer of 1996 on Cartoon Network as the Olympic Games were set to premiere in July. The special never aired on TV after 1996 and the only evidence found was in July 2020 when a user uploaded a three-second clip found in a CNN article promoting the special.
