He won the Tetsuya Chiba Award for promising new creators in 1988 and made his professional debut in 1989 in <em>Weekly Young Sunday</em> after working as an assistant to industry veteran Kenshi Hirokane. Recurring themes throughout his work include crime, psychology, sexual deviance, and the instability of identity.</p> <p>He is best known internationally for two series: <em>Ichi the Killer</em>, a brutal yakuza thriller that was adapted into a cult film by Takashi Miike in 2001, and <a href="https://lis5472.cci.fsu.edu/sp26/group6/items/show/26" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Homunculus"</a>, a cerebral psychological horror series in which trepanation unlocks the ability to perceive other people's repressed traumas as monstrous physical forms.
