Robert Smith from The Cure had played with Ian Curtis from Joy Division, as had many other musicians in the alternative British scene, and recorded this as tribute to the late Curtis. Many friends of Curtis (such as U2) have maintained the tradition of covering this very song for live sets while not recording it on releases.
