- Plant Size: 75-100 ft tall by 20-60 ft wide
- Habitat: Usually in low, wet flatwoods of poorly drained, acidic soils, and coastal sands. National Champion of 1977 (var. densa) reached 55 feet tall, 11.5 feet circumference, with a 63 foot spread (Sarasota, Fla.).
- Medicinal Uses: medical applications as a counter-irritant applied topically. Limited references imply the eating of inner bark for food during famine times.
