Mission:
ホラーManga on the DL is an online chronicle providing preservation for and access to detailed and linked data concerning Japanese manga in the horror genre. It provides examples of manga art and its development over time, as well as information about changing styles and subject matter in horror manga for readers, researchers, and developing artists.
Collection Scope:
Materials are selected based on both the content of the manga, and the creator’s contributions to the development of horror manga. The digital library’s material will cover a broad range of horror subgenres to showcase and highlight the genre’s variety in both content and art styles.
The goal of this collection is to focus on the different types of horror manga throughout the years of its existence (a period of roughly sixty years), which includes both different genres of horror (e.g., cartoon horror, body horror, supernatural horror, psychological horror, gore horror, etc.) and also different meta-descriptors beyond genre (e.g., shojo, shonen, josei, seinen).
Intended Users:
English speaking readers looking to explore the horror genre and its constituent sub-genres beyond what is available on typical sites. We also hope to appeal to artists looking for artistic examples of various horror manga.
History:
Created in Spring of 2026 for the LIS5472 Digital Libraries, ホラーManga on the DL came together over the course of a single semester. Five people with different backgrounds but a common interest in horror manga curated the collection and worked out the kinks in the metadata over the course 4 months.
The Future:
Hopefully, the digital library will continue to grow, with more and more examples of horror manga, author pages, publisher pages, features, exhibits, and timelines.
