Asano, Inio

Inio Asano (浅野いにお) is a Japanese manga artist born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1980. He won the inaugural Sunday GX Rookie Prize in 2001 and debuted professionally in Big Comic Spirits, quickly establishing a reputation for character-driven stories that blend slice-of-life realism with psychological unease. His art style is notable for its photorealistic backgrounds, achieved partly through layering digital photography with hand-drawn characters.

His best-known works include the existential Goodnight Punpun, which follows a boy from childhood through a deeply troubled adulthood, and the science-fiction series Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction, which was adapted into a pair of theatrical anime films in 2024. The Yomiuri Shimbun called Asano one of the voices of his generation in 2010.
