This image is of a Red-shouldered Hawk perched at the top of a dead tree at the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.
These forest hawks hunt prey ranging from mice to frogs to snakes. Adults of this species are colorful, with dark brown and white checkered wings and warm reddish barring on the breast. Sighting a Red-shouldered Hawk is typically an indication of tall woods and water.
