Port Elizabeth Main Library
First functioning as a courthouse, the Port Elizabeth library first opened its doors in 1902. The building housing the library has been regarded as "a great example of victorian gothic architecture". Although plans for its demolishing were drafted in order to make space for a provincial administration block in the 1960s, these were stopped short and the library remains. The library was declared a national monument in 1983.
