Ito, Junji

Born in the countryside of Japan in Gifu Prefecture in 1963, Junji Ito (伊藤潤二) was very young when he discovered his love of horror manga in mangaka like Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga, and soon, began to draw his own manga.

In his early 20s, he worked as a dental tech and a mangaka, and claimed that the tricks that he learned shaping and finishing dentures helped to customize the tools of the trade for his manga. 

Ito is widely considered the defining figure of contemporary horror manga, celebrated for his precise linework, unflinching body horror, and his ability to transform mundane objects into sources of existential dread. His series Uzumaki and the short story collections published by Viz Media have reached global audiences.

He has considered "Long Dream", "The Hanging Balloons" and "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" as some of his favorite of his works.

For his manga, he has won the Eisner Award four times.
