- Biographical Text
Mokumokuren is a contemporary Japanese manga creator best known for "The Summer Hikaru Died". They first conceived the series while studying for high school entrance exams, then began posting drawings on Twitter after graduating in early 2021. Approached by Kadokawa's Young Ace Up editorial department, they accepted serialization, making this work their professional debut.
Their horror philosophy prioritizes emotional realism over shock value, amplifying dread through the relationships between characters rather than frightening imagery alone. The Summer Hikaru Died won first place in the male reader's category of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! in 2023, was nominated for the Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist in 2024, and has been adapted into a novel and anime series.
Mokumokuren takes their pen name from a particular yokai - watchful eyes that grow on neglected shoji screens - and keeps their personal identity private.
