American Shorthair

American Short Hair

American Short Hair

History The American Shorthair is likely a descendent of shorthairs brought to the Americas from Europe during colonization, possibly on the Mayflower. These cats were brought along to control the mice population on ships. Originally called the "Domestic Shorthair," the name was changed to "American Shorthair" in the 1960s to distinguish the breed from its European ancestors.

Temperment Despite this breed's muscular build, the American Shorthair is traditionally laid-back and not particularly active! While the cat is normally affectionate, they do not enjoy being held and can be quite independent.

Size Medium-sized, muscular build

Appearance Stocky, muscular cat with a large head, medium-sized ears, and large, wide eyes. The breed can come in a variety of coat patterns and colors, with a gray tabby coat being most prevalent.

Things to consider Since the American Shorthair's appearance can vary widely, it can be difficult to verify their pedigree. This breed is known shedders!

Health concerns The American Shorthair's laid-back lifestyle makes the breed vulnerable to obesity. They are genetically predisposed to mouth and gum disease. Otherwise, this is a hardy and overall healthy breed!
