Maine Coon

History: As a breed, Maine Coons may be the oldest domesticated cat in what is now the United States.  It is believed that early settlers brought the cats aboard immigrant ships to combat mice in the early 1600's, settling in the present day state of Maine.  They might have originally been interbred from Norwiegian Forest Cats and Siberian Cats.

Temperment: The Maine Coon is often called the "gentle giant" for their sweet, loving disposition and their large size.  These very sociable cats are known for their intelligence and love of water.  Be warned, however, they are also known for being very vocal!

Size: They can grow up to 8 - 12 pounds for a female, or 13 - 18 pounds for a male on average.  The largest cat of this breed currently on record, however, is a whopping 35 pounds, and 48.5 inches long!

Coloration: Maine Coons can come in a wide variety of colors and coat markings, including marbled and tabby.

Things to Consider:  Maine Coons are large, highly intelligent, and known for their hunting skills.  They also typically have a long, double coat that will need brushing.  Have plenty for them to do and play with, including toys or food that they can hunt.

Known Health Issues: Maine Coons can have several genetic health issues without careful breeding.  They are prone to feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia
