Siamese

History The Siamese cat originated in Thailand before being imported to Europe in the late 19th century. In 1878 president Rutherford B. Hayes received what is believed to be the first Siamese cat to reach the United States as a gift from the American Consul in Bangkok.

Temperment Siamese cats are outgoing, extroverted cats that are known for their personalities! They are very talkative and demand attention. As such, this breed is not recommended for those who will be out of the house for long stretches of time.

Size Medium sized, long muscular body

Appearance The standard siamese is recognizable for its triangular head, pointy face with wide, almond-shaped eyes. Many siamese cats may have slightly crossed eyes. Siamese cats' appearance is characterized by a pointed pattern caused by a mild form of albinism which causes dark coloration in the extremities and face. Originally most Siamese cats were "seal" point with beige and dark chocolate coloring. Additional varieties include "blue" (cool gray) points, chocolate (light brown) points, lilac (pale warm gray) points, and flame (orange) points.

Things to consider The Siamese is not recognized as one of the best breeds for homes with children. However, all cats are different, and with proper introduction Siamese cats may learn to adapt to children.

Health ConcernsThe average Siamese cat lives approximately 12 to 14 years. Siamese cats are more prone to lung infections than other breeds. While not as prone to urinary tract infections, Siamese cats are at a higher risk of gastrointestinal problems.
